Acting - Research Paper/ Presentation - Fall 2005
MFA 496 (35-496M)

 

The purpose is to delve deeper into an understanding of methods, styles, or specific playwriting styles and how these have influenced modern or historic concepts of acting.

 Suggested Topics: Investigate various methods or styles of acting and performance. 

These may include but are not limited to various systems or Acting methods developed by individuals like:

Contantin Stanislavski, Lee Stasberg, Viola Spolin, Robert Barton, Meyerhold, or other major acting theorists etc.

or

 Comparative styles of drama or dramatic theory and how an actor approaches these in performance. Some examples of these:

Realism, Naturalism, Symbolism, Absurdist, melodrama, Comedy (farce, high/ low comedy, etc), Tragicomedy, Tragedy, modern drama, musical theater, Non-Western, etc.

or

Investigate the interpretation of a specific playwright’s style, or compare several playwrights’ styles and how the actor approaches these works.  Examples:

Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Oscar Hammerstein II, Berthold Brecht, Thornton Wilder, Oscar Wilde, William Shakespeare, etc.

 The Paper should be typewritten/word processed and may be submitted in electronic format (Microsoft WORD 97-2003, WORKS, or in plain text.  This should follow acceptable guidelines for a college level research paper (MLA or APA). You will also make an oral presentation in class summarizing your research. It should be approximately 7-10 double spaced pages not counting title or bibliography pages.

 Topics must be approved in advance and should be picked by October 10

 Oral Presentations and Papers are due on November 14.
