SYNOPSIS

A group of actors, who have apparently been abandoned by their drama teacher, have to fend for themselves opening night in front of a live audience.

Their teacher has left them hanging because no one has been showing up to the rehearsals and no one is really quite sure what they are supposed to do. The student assistant director and the stage manager step in, find a box of scripts which they pass out to the cast, and try to throw something together.
What follows is a rollicking show full of physical comedy, gags, and satirical re-writings of many plays from Shakespeare to Albee. The next time your high school wants to do a play, do them all...in under 90 minutes!
This play offers opportunities for audience participation.

(In the order of appearance)

The Characters of Just Another High School Play

* Some characters have potential to be split up I.E. Romeo

Assistant Director- This character is a zany person who signed up to direct because it gave him/her “something to do.”  AD is always making a fool of him/herself very publicly.

Stage Manager- The stage manager is funny through his/her serious nature which becomes exaggerated to the point of becoming a joke.  AD and SM are always fighting with each other, and SM is always the one who is trying to act like he/she knows what is going on, despite the fact that he/she is just as confused as everyone else.

Male Thespian- He appears in Act 1, Scene 2.  This character is just trying to help the progression of the show as an actor.  He is very witty.

Female Thespian- She appears in Act 1, Scene 2.  This character acts opposite the Male Lead and works together with him to tell a story, many times in a witty fashion.

Tom (or Tanya)- This character appears both in Act 1, Scene 3 and Act 2, Scene 6.  This person is characterized as a ditzy or dimwitted character who the other actors and actresses often see as strange.

Carrie (or Carson)- This character appears in both Act 1, Scene 3 and Act 2, Scene 6.  He/she is seen to be many times sarcastic and gets frustrated with the antics of his/her less than sharp counterpart Tom/Tanya.

Hamlet- This role is simply an actor practicing to be Hamlet to keep the show going.  This character becomes frustrated and confused at the actions of the sound booth during this scene.  This character appears in Act 1, Scene 4.

Marlowe- This character is a dramatization of the playwright Christopher Marlowe.  He is a cocky, haughty character who is very sure of himself.  He is critical of William and endlessly pokes fun at him.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 5

William- This character is a parody of William Shakespeare.  He believes himself to be a great playwright, but according to Marlowe, fills his plays with nonsense language and insane plotlines.  He believes in himself to a fault, and is not the brightest person.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 5.

Barkeep- He hands out the drinks to Marlowe and his friends, and gets involved with witty commentary when William first makes his entrance.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 5.

Grad Student- She/he talks, acts, walks, and does everything else like someone who is very proud.  The grad student believes him/herself to be a superior intellectual, and is very interested in theater.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 6.

Male Lead- This character does not have a distinct personality.  Rather, this character just does what he is told to do, and helps to keep the play going.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 6.

Female Lead- She does not have a true distinct personality as most of her stage time is spent as an actress, and not out of “character.”  Appears in Act 1, Scene 6.

Extra- The extra must be a versatile person as the grad student throws the most incredibly random and varied supporting characters at this character.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 6.

Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy- These girls are supposed to act out part of “Little Women,” but refuse to because they feel it is demeaning.  They are portrayed as the typical overzealous teenage girl types as they believe they are standing up for a cause, but most of the time they just make themselves seem foolish and unreasonable.  Appear in Act 1, Scene 7.

Male Meg, Male Jo, Male Beth, Male Amy- These four guys are shown as being subservient and weak.  They give in to the demands of the girls because they are stronger than them.  These guys are reluctant players in their parts, and are more rational, but do not appear so to the girls.  Appear in Act 1, Scene 7.

Scrooge- This character is a play on the stereotypical rapper type and can be compared to just about any popular rapper out there today.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 2.

Ghost- This character is a crazy rapper type almost like a Lil' Jon or Ludacris.  He tries too hard to be cool or “gangsta'.”  Appears in Act 2, Scene 2.

Tiny Tim- This character is a lovable, yet somewhat pathetic guy.  He is zany and somewhat strange, but becomes another rapper type when he is asked to beatbox.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 2.

Emily and George- These characters are two actors who are completely unprepared for their scene.  They improvise the best they can, and are very nervous.  They are quick thinkers who come up with a plan that works temporarily.  Appear in Act 2, Scene 3.

Tom Jones- He is a representation of the famous character in a funny way.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 4.

David Copperfield- He is a representation of the famous character.  He has to act like a magician.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 4.

Romeo- He is a puppet show parody of the tragic hero.  The character goes from being serious to silly very quickly.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 5.

Juliet- She is a puppet show parody of the tragic heroine.  She is often times portrayed as very ditzy, but quick witted.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 5.

Narrator- This character is not the typical narrator as he/she gets a bit too involved with the scene at many points.  Appears in Act 1, Scene 2 and Act 2, Scene 5.

Puppeteer- This character is active throughout the puppet show portraying more than one different voice and a few crazy characters.  Appears in Act 2, Scene 5.

Noel, Teena, Logan, and Craig- These four character are witty and funny and are able to snap into a scene with little or no preparation.  They are intelligent and funny.  Appear in Act 2, Scene 6.

Production Assistants- TBA
